The present invention relates to an animal caging system (1) comprising a standard rack (2) for animal cages (100) commonly used in vivarium facilities. The system according to the present invention is characterized in that it comprises a detachable breadboard (3), separated from said standard rack (2) and provided with a plurality of universal sockets (3a) to which several devices (10, 20, 30, 40) for the detection of cage condition and/or for the active control of the micro-environment of said cage (100) are connected. The animal caging system according to the present invention therefore allows the separation of parts of the caging system directly interacting with animals, and that need to be autoclaved, from system parts that do not interact with animals directly.
