The present invention relates to an antibacterial composition and a disinfecting method comprising the antibacterial composition. The present invention particularly relates to antimicrobial compositions for personal cleaning, oral care or hard surface cleaning applications. It has been found that a composition containing thymol, a selected antimicrobial alcohol and a carrier provides a synergistic antimicrobial effect. In a preferred embodiment, the composition also contains 1 to 80% by weight of one or more surfactants.
