PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a stable aqueous solution containing azulenes, improved in light stability, by preventing an insoluble substance from forming, and to provide a preparation enhanced in transferability of the azulenes and berberines to organismic tissue.

SOLUTION: This aqueous solution is obtained by making (C) a buffer agent and (D) a nonionic surfactant contained in an aqueous solution containing (A) the azulenes and (B) berberines. The aqueous solution thus obtained is improved in the light stability, prevents the insoluble substance from forming, and therefore is excellent in long-term stability. Further, lipophilicity of the azulenes and the berberines which are pharmacologically active components is improved, so that the transferability thereof to the organismic tissue is enhanced. Therefore, the aqueous solution is useful as the external preparation, especially, as an ophthalmic preparation.
