The present disclosure relates to medical imaging, and more specifically, relates to an image analysis system (1200) for automatic segmentation of normal tissues and abnormal tissues in magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) brain images. The image analysis system (1200) can include a data acquisition unit (1208). The data acquisition unit acquires MRI brain images from at least one image source database. The image analysis system can automatically segment acquired MRI brain images into normal tissues and abnormal tissues by: generating (1210) histogram representations of acquired MRI brain images and calculating (1212) number of sharp peaks present in generated histogram representations, wherein acquired MRI brain images are segmented as abnormal tissues if the number of sharp peaks is greater than a pre-determined threshold value, and acquired MRI brain images are segmented as normal tissues if the number of sharp peaks is less than or equal to a pre-determined threshold value.
