The air purifier filter system includes an air purifier filter unit and a machine readable identifier, the machine readable identifier being a type of filter unit and a plurality of different contaminants that are filtered by the type of filter unit. Among them, the performance information specific to the target pollutant to be filtered by the air purifier filter unit and information on the target contaminant are provided. This information can be used to give a life expectancy of the filter unit or to advise that the filter should be changed for other reasons. Thereby, a prior warning is given to the user, and an instruction as to when the filter unit should be changed can be given. The instructions for changing the filter unit can be more accurate than a simple timer because it can take into account the type and performance information of the filter unit.
