A method for producing a compressed tampon pad having substantially longitudinal grooves and a predetermined final diameter, comprising the following steps: a. inserting a tampon blank substantially enclosed in a coating into a press cavity having a central axis of the press and a plurality of elongated press molds arranged around the central axis of the press, the tampon blank having a longitudinal axis arranged substantially along the central axis of the press； b. performing the initial compression step by moving into the press cavity to the central axis of the press a plurality of longitudinal penetrating molds having pressing surfaces corresponding to a plurality of longitudinal segments of a groove in a desired compressed tampon pad, wherein the penetrating molds include at least one first penetrating mold having a pressing surface corresponding to the desired shape of the first groove segment, and at least one second penetrating mold having a pressing surface st corresponding to the shape of the second segment of the groove, to obtain a preform having a plurality of substantially longitudinal grooves separated by a plurality of substantially longitudinal ribs, wherein: i. the shapes of the first and second groove segments are combined to form a groove on the outer surface of the compressed pad of the tampon, the shape of the groove having a point of intersection in close proximity to one end of the compressed pad of the tampon； and ii. the pressing surfaces of the first and second penetrating molds are placed in a closed position having a clearance from the central axis of the press less than a predetermined total diameter； iii. pressing surface n1.
