An assembly of an inserter (10), a penetrating member (7), and a base part (8) is disclosed. The inserter (10) comprises a housing, a means to insert a penetrating member (7) into a patient and an actuator handle (11). The penetrating member (7) comprises either a cannula (22) or a sensor and is attached to the inserter (11) before and during insertion. The penetrating member (7) also comprises fastening means to unreleasably attach the penetrating member (7) to the base part (8) after insertion. The base part (8) comprises a surface plate means (1) and a fastening means (2) for attachment to the patient. Inserter attachment means (14L, 14R) lock the inserter (10) to the base part (8) before and during insertion. The inserter (10) guides a moving part from a first position to a final position to release the inserter (10) from the base part (8) by an interaction between the moving part and a part of the housing. The inserter (10) protrudes relative to the surface plate (1) at one end.
