A method for creating a subcutaneous implant pocket and implanting an implantable medical device therein, as well as an implantation kit that may be used in accordance with the method, are disclosed. The implantation kit includes an implantable medical device, a tunneling device, and an insertion tool. The method of use includes performing the implantation by creating a subcutaneous implant pocket with the tunneling device and using the insertion tool to deploy the implantable medical device within the subcutaneous implant pocket. Use of the kit in conjunction with the method enables quick and effective implantation of the implantable medical device while maintaining proper alignment during deployment. The kit and method of use also enable implantation of flexible implantable medical devices without bending, buckling, or becoming misaligned.
