A needle device having a needle guard (122) located in a first hub (152) mounted over a needle (104) having a second hub (154), a shaft, a needle tip (110) and a change in profile (128) located proximal of the needle tip (110). The needle guard (122) has a proximal wall (126) having a perimeter defining an opening therein, a first arm (20) extending distally from the proximal wall (126), and a second arm (30) extending distally from the proximal wall (126) opposite the first arm (20). The first arm (20) and the second arm (30) are spaced from the needle (104) in a ready to use position. The first arm (20), the second arm (30), or both arms cover the needle tip (110) in a protective position when the needle guard (122) is triggered by an activator (140).
