A diagnostic Electrochemical Impedance Spectroscopy (EIS) procedure is appliedtomeasure values of impedance-related parameters for one or more sensingelectrodes. Theparameters may include real impedance, imaginary impedance, impedancemagnitude, and/orphase angle. The measured values of the impedance-related parameters are thenused inperforming sensor diagnostics, calculating a highly-reliable fused sensorglucose value basedon signals from a plurality of redundant sensing electrodes, calibratingsensors, detectinginterferents within close proximity of one or more sensing electrodes, andtesting surface areacharacteristics of electroplated electrodes. Advantageously, impedance-relatedparameterscan be defined that are substantially glucose-independent over specific rangesof frequencies.An Application Specific Integrated Circuit (ASIC) enables implementation ofthe EIS-baseddiagnostics, fusion algorithms, and other processes based on measurement ofEIS-basedparameters.
