An atherectomy device having a replaceable drive shaft is disclosed. The atherectomy device has a drive shaft gear at the distal end of the interchangeable drive shaft for meshing engagement with the prime mover gear on the output shaft of the prime mover. The replaceable drive shaft is inserted into the opening at the distal end of the handle housing and axially moved in the proximal direction.
