A centrifugal pump used with a portable fluid collection device for collecting fluid generated by a person. The centrifugal pump includes a substantially cylindrical pump chamber having an inner diameter, a fluid inlet in fluid communication with the pump chamber, and a fluid outlet in fluid communication with the pump chamber. The pump further includes an impeller having an outer diameter. An impeller is rotatably mounted on a drive shaft intermediate the fluid inlet and the fluid outlet in the pump chamber, the drive shaft rotating the impeller in use and passing the fluid inlet through the fluid inlet. In order to accelerate the fluid flowing into the pump chamber and out of the fluid outlet, it can be rotated by drive means.
