1. A method of screening a population of plants for the presence therein of individuals that exhibit reduced susceptibility to ethylene and physiological disorders, in particular, to leaf mottling and yellowing, compared with a control plant, which comprises: a) obtaining a population of seeds b) germinating the seeds in darkness and in the presence of ethylene to obtain seedlings c) selecting seedlings that show longer hypocotyls than the hypocotyls sensitive to ethylene control d) selfing the selected seedlings to produce seeds e) germinating one part of the seeds produced from each selected seedling in darkness and in the presence of ethylene and another part of the seeds from each selected seedling in darkness in air and f) measuring the relative growth of the hypocotyls of the seedlings, germinated in a medium with ethylene in comparison with the growth of hypocotyls seedlings germinated in air for distinguishing plants that have a longer hypocotyl as compared to the parent sensitive control of ethylene and in the medium with ethylene and air environment from plants that have a longer hypocotyl as compared to the original ethylene-sensitive control only medium with ethylene, wherein plants that have a longer hypocotyl as compared to the parent chuvst pheno- to ethylene control only in an environment with ethylene are identified as plants exhibiting reduced susceptibility to ethylene and physiological disorders, in particular to the brown spot or pozhelteniyu.2. A method according to claim 1, further comprising the step of: g) testing the plants identified as exhibiting reduced susceptibility to ethylene1.
