1. A method of treating irritable bowel syndrome (IBS), comprising: administering 550 mg of rifaximin TID to a subject in need thereof, thereby treating irritable bowel syndrome (IBS) .2. The method of claim 1, wherein IBS is IBS with predominant diarrhea. The method of claim 1, wherein IBS is IBS with alternating diarrhea and constipation. The method of claim 1, wherein rifaximin is administered to the subject from about 14 days to about 24 months. The method of claim 1, wherein treating IBS includes treating one or more symptoms of IBS or a symptom of IBS swelling. The method of claim 5, wherein treating one or more symptoms of IBS is a reduction relative to the initial symptoms. The method of claim 6, wherein the initial symptoms are established prior to treatment. The method according to claim 6, wherein a sufficient alleviation of IBS symptoms includes receiving a yes answer from a subject to a question including: “Have you noticed a sufficient alleviation of IBS symptoms in the last 7 days?” 9.
