PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a method for modifying the surface of a vulcanized rubber or a thermoplastic elastomer with which excellent slidability and durability against repeated sliding are imparted, and also sealability can be maintained, without using an expensive resin having self-lubricating properties.SOLUTION: A surface modification method targeting a vulcanized rubber or thermoplastic elastomer as an object to be modified comprises a step 1 of making a photopolymerization initiator adsorbed on the surface of the object to be modified using a UV ray with 300-400 nm wavelength and a step 2 of irradiating a UV ray with 300-400 nm wavelength having the adsorbed photopolymerization initiator as a starting point to radically polymerize a monomer in the coexistence of a nitroxyl radical so as to grow a polymer chain on the surface of the object to be modified.COPYRIGHT: (C)2014,JPO&INPIT【課題】高価な自己潤滑性を有する樹脂を使用することなく、優れた摺動性、及び摺動の繰り返しに対する耐久性を付与し、かつシール性も維持できる加硫ゴム又は熱可塑性エラストマーの表面改質方法を提供する。【解決手段】加硫ゴム又は熱可塑性エラストマーを改質対象物とする表面改質方法であって、前記改質対象物の表面に300nm~400nmのUV光を用いて光重合開始剤を吸着させる工程1と、前記吸着させた光重合開始剤を起点にして、ニトロキシルラジカルの共存下で300nm~400nmのUV光を照射してモノマーをラジカル重合させ、前記改質対象物の表面にポリマー鎖を成長させる工程2とを含む表面改質方法に関する。【選択図】なし
