This document relates to the production of heterologous polypeptides in plants. In particular, this document provides materials and methods for producing polypeptides in plants that have reduced (e.g., that lack) beta-1,2-xylosyltransferase (XylT) and α-1,3-fucosyltransferase (FucT) activity. Because polypeptides produced in such plants have reduced levels of beta(1,2) xylosyl and core-alpha(1,3) fucosyl residues, they can be administered to humans and animals with a lower incidence of immunogenic or allergic reactions.
