The present invention relates to the use of a tryptophan metabolite, 3-hydroxyanthranilic acid (3-HAA) or a functional analogue thereof, for prophylactic and/or therapeutic treatment of mammals, in special humans, against hyperlipidemia and its cardiovascular complications, i.e. atheroma formation, myocardial infarction and heart failure, ischemic stroke and transient ischemic attacks, renal impairment, aortic aneurysms and critical limb ischemia caused by atherosclerosis.本発明は、高脂血症及びその心血管系の合併症、すなわち、アテロームの形成、アテローム性動脈硬化によって生じる心筋梗塞及び心不全、虚血性脳卒中及び一過性脳虚血発作、腎機能障害、大動脈瘤及び重症虚血肢に対する、哺乳類、特にヒトの予防及び／又は治療のための、トリプトファン代謝物、3-ヒドロキシアントラニル酸（3-HAA）又はその機能性類似体の使用に関する。
