The present invention relates to apparatus and method for making panoramic photographs of fingerprints present on surfaces of ammunition cartridges and other cylindrical objects. The apparatus basically consists of a platform containing two attachment points, one for the camera and one for the cartridge. Mounting allows the camera to be moved back and forth toward the cartridge as well as up and down in the vertical direction to frame the entire area of interest on the image screen. It also allows you to rotate the cartridge at well-defined angular intervals between shots, keeping the distance between camera and subject, lighting conditions and all the rest unchanged. The developed method allows the composition of the panoramic image of the lateral surface of the cartridge from the multiple photographs obtained using the apparatus. Only a narrow slice of the central region of the image is taken from each photo, where the cartridge surface is approximately flat and parallel to the focal plane of the camera. By doing so, you can get sharp focus over a larger region and less affected by distortions caused by projecting the edges of the cartridge onto the image plane.
