A dental implant 330 for promoting bone growth comprises an elongated implant body having a coronal end portion 331 and an apical end portion 332, an external thread 340 and a helical flute arrangement with at least two helical flutes 350 which spiral in the same general direction as the external thread and propagate with a greater lead than the thread - the flute arrangement being capable of scraping off and transferring bone debris in the coronal direction of the implant during insertion. An apical flank 351 of the flute provides a cutting edge. The flutes have a greater depth than the thread, with the flute base being inclined towards the longitudinal axis in the direction of the apical end of the insert. The thread height may vary. Coronal and apical sections 333,334 of the implant may be tapered, and separated by a knee 335. The thread and/or flute may comprise a groove 341.
