Compositions and methods for making airway cells are provided. In one aspect, epithelial airway cells derived from induced pluripotent stem (iPS) cells are characterized, characterized by the expression and proliferation capacity of airway cell surface markers. In another aspect, a method of differentiating iPS into epithelial respiratory cells is provided.
