Provided are an absorber and an absorbable article containing the same which have excellent water absorbing ability and leak preventing property and pursue the reduction of weight and thickness of the absorbable article. The absorber comprises a polysaccharide causing gelation reaction by a polyvalent metal ion and a supply source of the polyvalent metal ion, and the absorbable article includes the absorber. In the absorber, concurrently with or after the polysaccharide is dissolved or swollen, the polyvalent metal ion is supplied, and the absorbable article contains the absorber, and therefore, the absorber and the absorbable article have excellent water absorbing ability and leak preventing property and the reduction of weight and thickness of the absorbable article can be pursued.
