A method for providing location information of an animal (7) wearing an identification device (5). The method is performed via a communication network (4) using a location system including a network server (1) and database (2). The database (2) contains identification information relating to identification devices (5) and associated animals (7) and contact information relating to at least one contact (6) associated with each identification device (5). The method includes receiving data from mobile devices (3), the data including identifiers of any proximal identification devices (5) - being identification devices within wireless signal range of the mobile devices (3), and receiving data including location information from the mobile devices (3). The method further includes determining a selected identification device (5) - being at least one of the proximal identification devices, the step of determining a selected identification device including: providing identification information to the mobile device (3), the identification information including at least one descriptor of an animal (7) associated with each proximal identification device (5), and receiving data from the mobile device (3) including a said identifier of the selected identification device (5).
