The invention relates to a method of treatment for a mammal in need ofchemonucleolysis. The method comprising the administration of an effectiveproteoglycan cleaving amount of a proteoglycan-degrading enzyme and aneffective amount of a growth factor effective in promoting the synthesis of amatrix component. The proteoglycan-degrading enzyme is preferablychondroitinase. The growth factor is preferably osteogenic protein. Theproteoglycan-degrading enzyme and the growth factor are preferablyadministered simultaneously.
