The present invention relates to a novel porous zirconium silicate composition formulated to remove more toxins such as potassium ions from the gastrointestinal tract without causing undesirable side effects. This preferred composition comprises at least 95% ZS-9. These compositions are particularly useful for therapeutic treatment of hyperkalemia. These compositions are also useful for the treatment of chronic kidney disease, coronary vascular disease, diabetes mellitus, and transplant rejection.
