A multi-layered liquid collection structure for collecting fluids spilled, for example, during surgery. The structure comprises a first bottom layer (1) and a third layer (3) each with a set of openings for receiving liquid. A second layer (2) between the first (1) and third (3) layers comprises a vacuum tube (7) and a material which facilitates the generation and maintenance of a uniform vacuum between the layers for liquid collection. A fourth layer (4) is located above the third layer (3) and absorbs liquid by capillary action. Liquid is distributed along the absorbent fourth layer (4) and is evacuated via the holes in the third layer (3) and liquid can also be removed through the holes in the first layer (1).
