This ultrasonic observation device transmits ultrasonic waves toward an observed object, and causes a display device to display an ultrasound image generated on the basis of an ultrasound signal received from an ultrasonic transducer which receives ultrasonic waves reflected by the observed object. The ultrasonic observation device is provided with an operation control unit which controls the shape of a region of interest set within the ultrasound image, in accordance with a change in a position of contact of a contacting object in contact with a touch pad of an input device. The operation control unit detects the position of contact of the contacting object on the touch pad, calculates a first positional relationship based on two positions of contact on the touch pad, detects the position of the region of interest set within the ultrasound image, calculates a second positional relationship based on the position at which the region of interest has been set and a reference position, and controls the shape of the region of interest on the basis of a correlation between the first positional relationship and the second positional relationship.
