A tampon applicator has an elongate barrel 33 with an interior chamber for housing a tampon, a grip region 43 adjacent an outer end 35 of the barrel, a tip region 45 adjacent an inner end of the barrel, and a central region 43 extending longitudinally between the grip region and the tip region. A plunger 27 extends into the barrel at the outer end thereof and is moveable to expel the tampon from the barrel at its inner end. The plunger passes through a guide channel 63 of the barrel sized to be a close fit with the plunger. The outer surface of the barrel at the grip region may have a different coefficient of friction than at the central region of the barrel. In other embodiments the coefficient of friction of the barrel outer surface at the central region may be different from the coefficient of friction at the tip region. The grip region may incorporate a pattern or visual indicator 91. The tip region may incorporate petals 51.
