PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a three-dimensional shape detector which achieves compatibility between detecting accuracy and responsiveness in detecting a three-dimensional shape of an insertion member inserted into an object to be examined, and a method of detecting a three-dimensional shape of the insertion member.
SOLUTION: The three-dimensional shape detector for detecting the three-dimensional shape of an endoscope 7 inserted into the object to be examined is constituted in the following manner. The three-dimensional shape detector includes a detecting unit 5 which is provided in the endoscope 7 and is equipped with a plurality of sensors for acquiring detection signals in order to detect the three-dimensional shape, a processing unit 3 which calculates the three-dimensional shape of the endoscope 7 based on the detection signals acquired by the plurality of sensors the detecting unit 5 includes and performs reduction processing to be described below, and reduction determining means 3a which determines a region of the endoscope 7 subjected to the temporal data reduction in acquiring the detection signal by the detecting unit 5 or in calculating the three-dimensional shape by the processing unit 3.
