The present invention relates generally to copper salts of ion exchangematerials that provide copper ions at levelssuitable for use as an anti-infective agent. In certain aspects of theinvention, copper salts of cellulose derivatives are provided.The copper salts of ion exchange materials may be formed using ether and esterderivatives of cellulose, such as carboxymethylcellulose (CMC), ethylcellulose (EC), methylcellulose (MC), hydroxypropylcellulose (HPC), hydroxypropyl methyl cellulose(HPMC), hydroxyethyl methyl cellulose (HEMC), cellulose acetate, and cellulosetriacetate. The present invention also relates towound dressings having copper salts of ion exchange materials incorporatedtherein. The copper salts of ion exchange materialsmay produce an equilibrium of copper ions in a wound at a level that istherapeutically-effective for preventing infection.
