A catheter includes an elongated body, a distal assembly with a shape-memorymember defining agenerally circular form, and a control handle adapted to actuate a deflectionpuller wire fordeflecting a portion of the elongated body, and a contraction wire forcontracting the generallycircular form. The generally circular form which carries at least one ringelectrode has an off-edgeconfiguration relative to the elongated body such that a longitudinal axis ofthe elongated bodydoes not intersect the circumference of the circular form and the generallycircular form spiralsabout the longitudinal axis of the elongated body. Moreover, the circular formcan have an on-axisconfiguration such that the longitudinal axis of the elongated body is axiallyaligned with a centrallongitudinal axis of the circular form, or an off-axis configuration such thatthese axes are axiallyoffset from each other. In a more detailed embodiment, the catheter has adistal assembly with ahelical form or a crescent form carrying a plurality of irrigated ablationring electrodes and aplurality of smaller ring electrodes adapted for impedance recording or PVpotential recording. Asupport member with shape memory extends through the distal assembly toprovide the helical orcrescent form. The support member has a varying stiffness along its length,for example, adecreasing stiffness toward a distal end of the support member. The supportmember can also behollow so that it can receive a mandrel whose stiffness is greater than thatof the support member.
