A device, preferably a tracheostomy apparatus 20, comprises a device body 22, including an opening 26, the device being directly attachable over a stoma of an animal or human body to align the opening 26 and stoma and light emitting element 40 wherein preferably the light emitting element is arranged to illuminate at least part of the opening. The light emitting element may include one or more of a fluorescent material, a luminescent material, a phosphorescent material, a soft glow material, a light reflective material or a cold light source such as an organic light emitting diode (OLED).
