A device 100 for collecting blood from a blood source, such as an umbilical cord and placenta, comprises a conical housing 102 into which the umbilical cord 106 and placenta 104 are placed, at least one output 114 configured to allow passage of blood extracted from the blood source and/or at least a portion of the blood source therethrough, and two collecting containers 116, 138. One container 116 collects waste products and the other 138 collects blood (the cord 106 may be fed through into the second container 138). An inflatable bag 124 is provided in the housing 102 to exert pressure on the placenta 104 and cord 106 to aid extraction of blood. Alternatively gravity may be used to drain the blood. The two collecting vessels may have separate outputs 114, 136 from the housing (fig. 1), or the collecting container may comprise the second output (fig. 2).
