Erfindungsgemäß wird ein Verfahren zum sterilen Benutzen eines Operationsmikroskops (11) unter Verwendung eines Drapes (20) zur Verfügung gestellt. In dem Verfahren wird ein Drape (20) mit einem ihm zugeordneten lesbaren und beschreibbaren Datenspeicher (21) bereitgestellt, auf dem Daten über den Benutzungszustand des Drapes (20) gespeichert sind. Des Weiteren umfasst das erfindungsgemäße Verfahren ein Operationsmikroskopsystem (10), das ein Operationsmikroskop (11), eine Kommunikationseinheit (12) und eine Freigabeeinheit (13) aufweist. Die Kommunikationseinheit (12) ist zum einen dazu ausgebildet, die auf dem Datenspeicher (21) des Drapes (20) gespeicherten Daten über dem Benutzungszustand des Drapes (20) auszulesen. Zum anderen ist sie dazu ausgebildet, den Datenspeicher (21) des Drapes (20) mit Daten zu beschreiben. Die Freigabeeinheit (13) ist dazu ausgebildet, das Operationsmikroskop (11) zur Benutzung freizugeben.
