A computer-assisted surgery system isprovided to guide an operator in inserting a femoralimplant of a hip joint implant in a resected femur.The system comprises a trackable reference device onthe femoral implant, a registration device, and asensing apparatus for tracking the devices. Acontroller i) calculates an orientation of thedevices as a function of the tracking, and ii)digitizes surface information of the femoral implantas a function of the tracking. An implant geometryinformation calculator calculates geometryinformation of the femoral implant from saidpredetermined configuration with respect to thetrackable reference device, as a function of saidsurface information of the femoral implant.
