Methods for treating a patient having a disease or damage to at least onekidney are provided. The methods compriseadministering cells obtained from human umbilical cord tissue, oradministering pharmaceutical compositions comprising such cellsor prepared from such cells. When administered, the cells promote and supportthe repair and regeneration of the diseased or damagedkidney tissue in the patient. Pharmaceutical compositions for use in theinventive methods, as well as kits for practicing the methodsare also provided.
