Within the framework of a mobile health care system, an exchange of medicaldata between a portable medical device (114) and a health care server (150) isrequired. Therefore, a method for monitoring medical data is disclosed, themethod being applicable to a system (110) comprising a portable medical device(114), a mobile communications device (112), and, optionally, a medical careserver (150), the portable medical device (114) and the mobile communicationsdevice (112) each comprising at least one interface (126, 136) for 10 datatransfer. The method comprises a step of establishing a download link (144)between the mobile communications device (112) and a download server (146).Followingly, the method comprises a step of selecting an appropriatecommunication software package from a plurality of communication softwarepackages for controlling a data transfer between the mobile communicationsdevice (112) and the portable medical device (114) from the download server.Further, the method comprises a download step for downloading communicationsoftware package from the download server (146) to the mobile communicationsdevice (112) and a step of installation of the communication software packageon the mobile communications device (112).
