The surgical access assembly (100) includes a resiliently compressible adapter (130) having proximal and distal ends (130a, 130b), an opening (120a) at the proximal end (130a), and a passage for receipt of the access port (110). The adapter (130) has a diameter at its distal end (130b) different from the diameter of the distal end (1 Ob) of the access port (110). The adapter (130) has at least one opening (1 20b) in its distal end (130b) to allow an object to exit the at least one lumen (120).
