A suture package cover (16) is provided to protect the surgical needle-suture assembly prior to use. The suture package cover (16) includes a disc (18) engageable with the suture tray (12) to protect the suture retained in the suture tray (12) and an elongate flap (20) configured to overlie the loading unit (14) to protect the surgical needle contained therein.
