589234 A safety device for shielding a needle tip is disclosed. The device (10) comprises a sleeve (16) interlocked with a catheter adapter (14). A safety clip (28) is partially housed in the sleeve (16) and partially housed in the catheter adapter (14). A needle extends through the sleeve (16), the catheter adapter (14), and the safety clip (28). Upon removal of the needle from the catheter adapter (14), the tip (22) of the needle is retained within the safety clip (i.e. via flaps 30, 30a) and is prevented from reemerging from the safety clip (28) which is retained within the sleeve (16).
