A vessel filter comprises a first region (317) and a second region (315), the filter being movable between a collapsed position for delivery to the vessel and an expanded position for placement within the vessel. The first region has a first set of struts (330, 414, 514) forming a first mounting portion (421, 521) and a filter portion (332, 419, 519) opening in a first direction. The filter portion has a first converging region (334, 432, 522) at a first portion to direct particles toward the center of the filter, while the mounting portion is flared in the expanded position to have a transverse dimension increasing toward a second portion opposite the first portion. The second region (315) has a second set of struts (350, 454, 534, 534) forming a second mounting portion which is flared in the expanded position and opening in the first direction. A plurality of spaced apart struts (340, 430) extend between the first and second regions.
