An endoscopic surgical instrument (1) comprises a stationary component (2), an elongate shaft extending from the stationary component (2), and an end effector positioned at the distal end of the shaft. The stationary component (2) comprises at least one contact portion (4) adapted to be engaged by the fingers of a user, the instrument also comprising a movable component (3) comprising a contact portion (5) designed to be engaged by the thumb of a user. The longitudinal movement between the contact portions causes the movable component (3) to move longitudinally relative to the stationary component (2) between a first proximal position, a second distal position, and a third position. Movement of the movable component (3) between the first and second positions causes a corresponding movement of the end effector between corresponding first and second positions.
