A non-invasive light-based physiological monitoring system is disclosed. One embodiment includes an emitter configured to emit light. The diffuser is configured to receive and diffuse the emitted light and to emit diffused light to the tissue measurement site. The system further includes a concentrator configured to receive the diffused light after the diffused light is attenuated by or reflected from the tissue measurement site. The concentrator is also configured to collect and focus the received light and emit the focused light to the detector. The detector is configured to detect the focused light and transmit a signal indicative of the detected light.
