An emulsion composition which contains the following components (A), (B), (C), (D) and (E) and (F): (A) a glycerol monofatty acid ester which is derived from a straight-chain fatty acid having 10-24 carbon atoms (B) a higher alcohol having 10-24 carbon atoms (C) a ceramide (D) an anionic surfactant (E) a polar oil which is selected from among branched fatty acid esters having an IOB of 0.2-0.85, said branched fatty acid esters having a hydroxyl group or an amino group and (F) water. The mass ratio of the total content of the components (A) and (B) and (C) and the component (D) in terms of acid to the content of the component (E), namely, ((A) + (B) + (C) + (D))/(E) is 1.2-25.
