Disclosed is a device adapted to measure intraocular pressure comprising: a corneal contact lens 10 having a pressure sensor mounted in a recess or cavity in the contact lens, wherein the contact lens has a back surface, with a protrusion 20 beyond the profile of the adjacent part of the lens which presses against the cornea. The protruding portion experiences a reactive deformation which is detected directly or indirectly by the pressure sensor. The pressure sensor comprises a stiff bridge portion 22 and a flexible diaphragm 24 which support thin metal parallel plates 26, 27, forming a capacitor. When a force is applied to the protrusion (e.g. by the eyelid), the diaphragm membrane 24 deforms and the distance between the plates changes, changing the capacitance and affecting the resonant frequency of the system and inductance of the metal respondent coil 13 (see figure 2) in the lens. An exciter coil 29 (see figure 2) is energised with alternating current and used to detect the resonant frequency of the respondent coil. Preferably, the transition portion of the lens is used (see figure 8).
