Conventionally, a biomarker of a lung state can be obtained using a spirometer. Spirometers provide an estimate of the volume of air exhaled by the lungs. This is a fairly indirect biomarker of lung status staging, as a decrease in lung volume can only appear when symptoms have progressed considerably. Lung conditions such as chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) are typically not visible on conventional x-ray attenuation images. This is because the related tissue (microstructured lung tissue with alveoli) contains a lot of air. The X-ray dark field can show fine structures such as alveoli.
