Disclosed is a system for detecting an analyte in a bodily fluid. The system includes a fluidic device having a sample collection unit and an assay assembly for reacting the sample with reactants contained in the assay assembly to yield a detectable signal indicating the presence of the analyte. The system also includes a reader assembly comprising a detection assembly for detecting the detecting signal. A communication assembly is provided for transmitting the detected signal to an external device. The system is configured to receive a fluidic device-specific protocol. The protocol may be transmitted from the external device to the reader assembly and can include instructions to control the reaction of the sample with the reactant.
