The invention provides a vaccine including an isolated AIs protein family member havingcell adhesion activity, or an immunogenic fragment thereof, with an adjuvant ina pharmaceutically acceptable medium. The invention also provides a method oftreating or preventing hematogenously disseminated or mucocutaneous candidiasis. Themethod includes administering an immunogenic amount of a vaccine an isolated AIsprotein family member having cell adhesion activity, or an immunogenic fragment thereof,in a pharmaceutically acceptable medium. A method of treating or preventing disseminatedcandidiasis also is provided that includes administering an effective amountof an isolated AIs protein family member having cell adhesion activity, or anfunctional fragment thereof, to inhibit the binding or invasion of Candida toa host cell or tissue. The AIs protein family member can be derived from a Candida strainselected from the group consisting of Candida albicans, Candida krusei, Candidatropicalis, Candida glabrata and Candida parapsilosis and the AIs protein familymember includes AIs Ip, Als3p, Als5p, AlsÌp, Als7p or Als9p. Also providedis a method of treating or preventing Staphylococcus aureus infections. Themethod includes administering an immunogenic amount of a vaccine an isolated AIsprotein family member having cell adhesion activity, or an immunogenic fragment thereof,in a pharmaceutically acceptable medium.
