An inlet for receiving a blood, and outlet for discharging the blood, artificial ventricles comprising a chamber disposed between the inlet and the outlet is provided. Mechanism for actuating the artificial ventricle expanded configuration or contracted configuration are also provided. In the extended form, the blood flows into the inlet. In the contracted configuration, blood flows out from the outlet. The outlet may be provided with a one-way valve to prevent backflow of blood into the chamber. One-way valve may be a diaphragm valve. The chamber may have a resilient outer wall.
