PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To enable an insertion position to be checked on a photoacoustic image even when the insertion is inserted into a deep position of a subject or inserted almost at a perpendicular angle.SOLUTION: An insertion is, for example, a hollow puncture needle 15 having an opening at the tip. The puncture needle 15 includes a light guide member 152 for guiding the light emitted from a first light source to the vicinity of the opening, and a light emission part 153 provided in the vicinity of the opening for emitting the light guided by the light guide member 152. A first photoacoustic wave attributed to the light emitted from the light emission part 153 is generated in the puncture needle 15. The first photoacoustic wave is detected after the puncture needle is inserted into a subject, and a first photoacoustic image is generated on the basis of the first photoacoustic wave.SELECTED DRAWING: Figure 2
