Radioactive binding assays may be used to measure bacterial adherence tointestinal mucus.However, no non-radioactive method is available for detecting, identifying,and measuringbacterial adherence to mucus. The present invention generally relates tomethods for detecting,identifying, and measuring bacterial adherence to mucus and epithelial cells.In particular, thepresent invention provides assays for detecting and identifying the presenceor absence ofbacterial adherence to mucus (epithelial cells (e.g., present in theintestines)), or other portion ofan animal where bacteria may be present, and methods for identifying andcharacterizing (e.g.,the efficacy of) modulators of bacterial adherence to mucus and epithelialcells, or other portionof the animal where bacteria may be present. The assay disclosed uses a non-radioactivecolorimetric assay. In some embodiments, the present invention provides kitscomprising anon-radioactive enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay (ELISA).
